About this course

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in adults is frequently misdiagnosed or overlooked, leading to challenges in accessing appropriate care. This masterclass equips psychiatrists with specialist skills to assess and manage ASD in adults, particularly those with co-occurring psychiatric conditions.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):

  • Identify late-diagnosed ASD presentations in adults, including subtle and complex cases.
  • Differentiate ASD from overlapping psychiatric conditions (e.g., OCD, schizophrenia, personality disorders).
  • Develop tailored treatment strategies for autistic adults with co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Understand the role of occupational, psychological, and pharmacological interventions.

Dr Khadija El-Hammasi MBChB, BMSc, MRCPsych

Dr. Khadija El-Hammasi (MBChB, BMSc, MRCPsych) is a highly experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with a strong background in neurodevelopmental disorders, complex psychiatric presentations, and rehabilitation psychiatry. With over a decade of experience in psychiatry across the UK and internationally, she specializes in the assessment and management of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and co-occurring mental health conditions in adults.

Dr. El-Hammasi has extensive expertise in managing complex cases involving ASD, ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety, and neuropsychiatric conditions. She has worked in both hospital and community settings, leading multidisciplinary teams to provide holistic and patient-centered care.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. El-Hammasi is an educator and mentor, actively involved in postgraduate psychiatric training. She serves as a Postgraduate Tutor for medical education at Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, where she plays a key role in training and developing future psychiatrists.

Dr. El-Hammasi brings clinical expertise, academic insight, and a passion for neurodevelopmental psychiatry to her teaching, ensuring that psychiatrists gain practical, evidence-based strategies for managing ASD in children and adolescents.
